Gianna Beretta Molla, nasceu em Magenta (Milão,Itália), no dia 4 de outubro de 1922, dia de São Francisco
Formou-se com louvor em medicina e cirurgia em 1949 pela Universidade de Pavia (Itália).Entre seus clientes, demonstra especial cuidado para as mães, crianças, idosos e pobres.
Especializou-se em Pediatria na Universidade de Milão em 1952, mas freqüentou a Clínica Obstétrica Mangiagalli, pois por seu grande amor às crianças e às mães pretendia unir-se ao seu irmão, Padre Alberto, médico e missionário no Brasil que, com a ajuda do seu outro irmão engenheiro, Francesco, construíram um hospital na cidade de Grajaú, no Estado do Maranhão. A Beata Gianna, por sua saúde frágil, foi desaconselhada pelo Bispo Dom Bernareggi em vir ao Brasil.
Opta pela vocação matrimonial, que a abraça com entusiasmo, assumindo total doação «para formar uma família realmente cristã».
Casa em 24 de setembro de 1955, tendo a cerimônia sido presidida por seu outro irmão Padre Giuseppe. Na quarta gravidez, aos 39 anos em setembro de 1961 no final do segundo mês de gravidez, vê-se atingida por um fibroma no útero. Três opções lhe foram apresentadas: retirar o útero doente, o que ocasionaria a morte da criança, abortar o feto, ou a mais arriscada, submeter-se a uma cirurgia de risco e preservar a gravidez. Antes de ser operada, embora sabendo o grave perigo de prosseguir com a gravidez, suplica ao cirurgião "Salvem a criança, pois tem o direito de viver e ser feliz!" , então, entrega-se à Divina Providência e à oração.
Com o feliz sucesso da cirurgia, agradece intensamente a Deus a salvação da vida do filho. Passa os sete meses que a distanciam do parto com admirável força de espírito e com a mesma dedicação de mãe e de médica. Receia e teme que seu filho possa nascer doente e suplica a Deus que isto não aconteça.
Alguns dias antes do parto, demonstra-se pronta a sacrificar sua vida para salvar a do filho: "Se deveis decidir entre mim e o filho, nenhuma hesitação: escolhei - e isto o exijo - a criança. Salvai-a". Deu entrada, para o parto na sexta-feira da Semana Santa de 1962. Na manhã do dia seguinte, 21 de abril de 1962, nasce Joana Manuela (Gianna Emanuela). Apenas teve a filha por breves instantes nos braços. Apesar dos esforços para salvar a vida de ambos, na manhã de 28 de abril, em meio a atrozes dores e após ter repetido a jaculatória "Jesus eu te amo, eu te amo" morre santamente. Tinha 39 anos.
"Meditata immolazione" (imolação meditada), assim Paulo VI definiu o gesto da Beata Gianna recordando, no Ângelus dominical de 23 de setembro de 1973, "uma jovem mãe da Diocese de Milão que, para dar a vida à sua filha sacrificava, com imolação meditada, a própria". É evidente, nas palavras do Santo Padre, a referência cristológica ao Calvário e à Eucaristia.
O milagre da beatificação aconteceu no Brasil, em 1977, na cidade de Grajaú, no Maranhão, naquele hospital onde queria ser missionária, onde foi beneficiada uma jovem protestante que tinha dado à luz.
Foi Beatificada pelo Papa João Paulo II, em 24 de abril de 1994 no Ano Internacional da Família, tendo sido considerada esposa amorosa, médica dedicada e mãe heróica, que renunciou à própria vida em favor da vida da filha, na ocasião da gestação e do parto.
