Após o Concílio Vaticano II, muitos já não sabiam ao certo em que os cristãos acreditavam. O papa João Paulo II tomou uma decisão audaz: que bispos de todo o mundo escrevessem um livro que pudesse apresentar em que a Igreja Católica crê.
Confiou ao Cardeal Joseph Ratzinger a missão de coordenar os trabalhos destes bispos, fazendo com que contribuições vindas de bispos de lugares tão diferentes, pudessem integrar-se e formar umverdadeiro livro.
Este livro foi construído com cerca de três encontros anuais, durante uma semana inteira, discutindo cada parte do livro que ia nascendo. O Catecismo da Igreja Católica foi feito com uma estrutura retirada da experiência catequética: “Em que cremos”; “Como celebramos os mistérios cristãos”; “A vida em Cristo”; “Como devemos orar”.
Durante a composição do livro, percebeu-se as diferenças continentais, culturais e etários. Então segundo o Papa Bento XVI, ficou claro que era necessário “traduções”, para melhor tocar as pessoas.
No dia 11 de Outubro de 1992, o Papa João Paulo II entregava aos fiéis de todo o mundo o Catecismo da Igreja Católica.
No dia 28 de Junho de 2005, Bento XVI apresenta o Compêndio do Catecismo da Igreja Católica que espelha fielmente na estrutura, nos conteúdos e na linguagem o Catecismo da Igreja
Surgiu a necessidade de traduzir na linguagem dos jovens.
Sob a orientação do Arcebispo de Viena, Christoph Schonborn, surgiu então um Catecismo Jovem. O YOUCAT é uma abreviatura de Youth Catechism (Catecismo Jovem), que baseado no Catecismo da Igreja Católica, está escrito para jovens que querem saber em que acreditam. Foi lançado em Agosto de 2011 na Jornada Mundial da Juventude de Madrid.
O YouCat tem a mesma estrutura do Catecismo da Igreja Católica. É composto por 527 perguntas simples, com respostas que exprimem a fé da Igreja Católica. Tem uma linguagem jovem, exemplos cotidianos. Muito colorido, com fotos, desenhos chama a atenção. Nos cantos das páginas tem diversas citações bíblicas, frases de santos e definições importantes, que dizem respeito aos temas apresentados naquela página.
No prefácio do YOUCAT o papa pede aos jovens: “Estudai o catecismo com paixão e perseverança! Para isso, sacrificai tempo! Estudai-o no silêncio do vosso quarto, lede-o enquanto casal se tiverdes a namorar, formai grupos de estudo e nas redes sociais, partilhai-o entre vós na internet! Permanecei deste modo num diálogo sobre a vossa fé!”.

YOU CAT? Catechism of the YOUCAT
After Vatican II, many already were not sure where Christians believed. Pope John Paul II made a bold decision: to bishops around the world to write a book that would provide that the Catholic Church believes.

In the corners of the pages has several biblical quotations, phrases and definitions important saints, that relate to the themes presented on that page.
In the preface to YOUCAT Pope asks young people: "Study the catechism with passion and perseverance! For this reason, sacrificial time! Study it in the silence of your room, read it if you have the couple while dating, Formal study groups and social networks, partilhai it among yourselves on the internet! Remain this way a dialogue on your faith. "
