O papa Bento 16 desembarcou nesta sexta-feira no Líbano para uma visita de três dias, durante os quais pretende estimular os cristãos do Oriente Médio a conviver pacificamente com os muçulmanos, em uma região abalada pelo conflito na Síria e a ascensão dos extremistas.
Ainda no avião, Bento 16 pediu o fim da entrega de armas na Síria, criticou o fundamentalismo religioso e elogiou a Primavera Árabe.
"As importações de armas devem cessar de uma vez por todas. Sem estas importações, a guerra não poderia continuar", disse o Papa.
Bento 16 afirmou ainda que viu na Primavera Árabe "um desejo de mais democracia, liberdade, cooperação para uma identidade árabe renovada", ao mesmo tempo que criticou o fundamentalismo, uma "falsificação da religião".
O Papa estava sorridente e emocionado ao desembarcar do avião, que pousou às 13h40 locais (7h40 de Brasília) no aeroporto internacional de Beirute, onde foi recebido por autoridades libanesas, incluindo o presidente da República, Michel Sleimane, o único cristão que é chefe de Estado em um país árabe.
"Todos os integrantes da família libanesa o recebem com gratidão", afirmou o presidente do país.
Mais de 100 jovens vestidos de branco estavam na pista e exibiam uma faixa com a frase "Líbano alegre, o Papa chegou".
Os sinos das igrejas de todo o país ressoaram em homenagem ao Sumo Pontífice, de 85 anos, que foi recebido com 25 salvas de canhão.
EQUILÍBRIO ENTRE MUÇULMANOS E CRISTÃOS
No aeroporto, o Papa fez o primeiro de sete discursos previstos durante a visita.
Bento 16 elogiou a convivência entre as diferentes comunidades religiosas no Líbano, que chamou de "exemplo" para o Oriente Médio.
"A feliz convivência libanesa deve demonstrar, ao conjunto do Oriente Médio e ao restante do mundo, que, dentro de uma nação, pode existir a colaboração e o diálogo religioso entre cristãos e seus irmãos de outras religiões".
"Este equilíbrio, presente em todas as partes como um exemplo, é extremamente delicado", completou o Papa.

At the airport, the Pope made the first of seven planned speeches during the visit.
16 Benedict praised the coexistence between different religious communities in Lebanon, which he called "example" for the Middle East.
"A happy coexistence Lebanese must demonstrate to the entire Middle East and the rest of the world, which, within a nation, there may be collaboration and dialogue between Christians and religious brothers of other religions."
