O segundo dia do Tríduo pascal, o Sábado Santo, é o único dia do ano sem liturgia: um dia vazio, um dia em que a história jaz no túmulo do Senhor. Contudo, nossa Profissão de Fé – o Credo – afirma que o Senhor “foi crucificado, morto e sepultado”; da sepultura ele “desceu à mansão dos mortos (aos infernos)”; e depois, “ressuscitou ao terceiro dia”. A espiritualidade litúrgica ocidental praticamente faz do Sábado Santo um dia de silêncio, de ornamentação das igrejas, deixando Jesus abandonado no sepulcro. Um dia sem sentido.
Será que Deus Pai, que declarou a Jesus “Tu és meu Filho, em ti encontro minha alegria” (Mc 1,11), o abandonou? Será que o grito de Jesus “Meu Deus, meu Deus, por que me abandonaste?” (Mc 15,34) encontrou resposta apenas no terceiro dia?
A derrota na cruz é a vitória da Cruz
Os Santos Pais da Igreja e a liturgia do Oriente meditam e celebram a realidade do “desceu aos infernos”. Deus não abandonou seu Filho, pois logo o ressuscitou no Espírito e ele, segundo o Credo, “desceu à mansão dos mortos”, antes do Aleluia da ressurreição.
Num hino litúrgico, Santo Epifânio ensina: “Hoje há um grande silêncio na terra: o Senhor morreu na carne e desceu para destruir o reino dos infernos. Foi procurar Adão, o primeiro pai, como a ovelha perdida. O Senhor desce e visita aqueles que jazem nas trevas e na sombra da morte”. Um hino de Efrém o Sírio, canta: “Aquele que disse a Adão ‘Onde estás?’ desceu aos infernos à procura dele, encontrou-o, chamou-o e lhe disse: ‘Vem, tu que és à minha imagem e semelhança! Eu desci onde tu te encontras para novamente levar-te à terra prometida’”. E reza a Liturgia siríaca: “Tu, Senhor Jesus, guerreaste com a morte durante os três dias de morada no túmulo, semeaste a alegria e a esperança entre aqueles que habitam os infernos”.
Às 15 horas da Sexta-feira santa (9 de abril do ano 30) deu-se a segunda descida do Senhor. Pela Encarnação, ele desceu e veio habitar a carne, a cultura, a história humana. Pela Morte ele continua a descida, total: às profundezas da morte, aos abismos do coração humano, ao interior da criação. Satanás viu na Cruz a arma da derrota definitiva de Deus. Cristo, porém, com essa mesma Cruz, enfrenta Satanás em todas as esferas onde ele construiu seus ninhos e o derrota definitivamente. Com sua morte, Cristo derrotou a Morte e libertou todos aqueles que lhe eram prisioneiros, iniciando por Adão e Eva. A mesma pergunta que o Pai fez no Paraíso ‘Adão, onde estás?’ Cristo faz no reino da Morte e Adão lhe reconhece a voz: a voz da Vida, a voz que ele escutava no Paraíso.
A descida à mansão dos mortos torna-se salvação de todo o cosmos: Cristo desce ao coração da terra, no coração da criação, nas zonas infernais que ocupam as profundezas humanas. É agora o Senhor dos seres celestes, terrestres e subterrâneos! (cf. Fl 2, 10-11).
Cristo continua a descer nos abismos humanos
O santo e grande Sábado continua, pois a criação tem o indescritível poder de lutar contra a Cruz, colocar-se do lado de Satanás. São os tempos históricos em que fazemos a pergunta ‘Meu Deus, meu Deus, por que me abandonaste?’. E Deus responde: ‘Meu filho, meus filhos, por que me abandonaram?’. Não é Deus quem se ausenta: é o homem que se ausenta de Deus. Olhando a história que nos cerca podemos até dizer que os inocentes continuam a obra redentora. São eles os que mais amargam as conseqüências do pecado no mundo. Os pobres do mundo perenizam o grito da Cruz, oferecendo-se como vítimas de expiação. Continua o grande Sábado dos camponeses brasileiros, da infância abandonada, tempos esses misteriosos e que convidam ao ateísmo, pois a corrupção política, a grilagem de terras, o tráfico combatem a Cruz com a Cruz. Em nome de Deus querem matar Deus em seus filhos! O grande Sábado cósmico da poluição, do desmatamento, da destruição da natureza.
O grande Sábado é santo: Cristo continua e continuará penetrando os abismos de nosso egoísmo, de nossa história, de nossos sistemas opressores, penetrando os abismos de nossas Igrejas que da Cruz tiram o Sangue e a Oferenda e a revestem de ouro, sedas, honras e lucros. Para manter “nossas obras”, no altar se recebem oferendas que chegam manchadas pelo sangue de filhos explorados e as apresentamos como anúncios de um mundo convertido.
O grande Sábado é silencioso e santo. O primeiro som a ser escutado após seu silêncio será o som do “Aleluia!”. Aqueles que deixaram o Senhor combater Satanás no mais íntimo de seu ser gritarão, exultantes: “Aleluia! Exulte o céu e a terra! O Senhor ressuscitou!”. Num dia, esse canto será cósmico e eterno.

The second day of the Easter Triduum, Holy Saturday, is the only day of the year without liturgy: an empty day, a day when the story lies in the tomb of the Lord.
