Santa Mônica nasceu no norte da África, em Tagaste, no ano 332, numa família cristã que lhe entregou – segundo o costume da época e local – como esposa de um jovem chamado Patrício.

Como cristã exemplar que era, Mônica preocupava-se com a conversão de sua família, por isso se consumiu na oração pelo esposo violento, rude, pagão e, principalmente, pelo filho mais velho, Agostinho, que vivia nos vícios e pecado. A história nos testemunha as inúmeras preces, ultrajes e sofrimentos por que Santa Mônica passou para ver a conversão e o batismo, tanto de seu esposo, quanto daquele que lhe mereceu o conselho: "Continue a rezar, pois é impossível que se perca um filho de tantas lágrimas".

Santa Mônica tinha três filhos. E passou a interceder, de forma especial, por Agostinho, dotado de muita inteligência e uma inquieta busca da verdade, o que fez com que resolvesse procurar as respostas e a felicidade fora da Igreja de Cristo. Por isso se envolveu em meias verdades e muitas mentiras. Contudo, a mãe, fervorosa e fiel, nunca deixou de interceder com amor e ardor, durante 33 anos, e antes de morrer, em 387, ela mesma disse ao filho, já convertido e cristão: "Uma única coisa me fazia desejar viver ainda um pouco, ver-te cristão antes de morrer".

Por esta razão, o filho Santo Agostinho, que se tornara Bispo e doutor da Igreja, pôde escrever: "Ela me gerou seja na sua carne para que eu viesse à luz do tempo, seja com o seu coração para que eu nascesse à luz da eternidade".
